Grantee Jane Ferguson’s Reporting on Crises Draws More Recognition

Pulitzer Center grantee and award-winning journalist Jane Ferguson is once again being honored for her front-line reporting.

PBS NewsHour has received a nomination for the prestigious Peabody Award, thanks to Ferguson and her team’s reporting on the Yemeni war in the series Inside Yemen. The longtime TV news program also received a second Peabody nomination, for its coverage of the January 6 attack at the Capitol.

With support from the Pulitzer Center, Ferguson, a foreign correspondent, returned to Yemen in 2021.

“The NewsHour team risked their lives to deliver viewers crucial and subjective perspectives on the war that could not be found on any other American network. Ferguson’s reporting in 2021 delved into the implications of Yemen’s war, including food insecurity harming Yemen’s children, whether it can survive as a unified state after the seven-year-long war, and the country’s division,” according to a press release by PBS NewsHour on Wednesday.

Ferguson is a Polk, Emmy, and DuPont award winner. Her reporting for NewsHour also includes Pulitzer Center-supported work earlier this year in Ukraine and previously from South Sudan and Iraq. She has also participated in Pulitzer Center webinars and educational outreach, including a visit last fall to Elon University.

In addition, Ferguson was named among the winners in the 47th annual Gracie Awards, which honor excellent programming “created by, for and about women in radio, television, and digital medias.” She was recognized for her reporting on the fall of Kabul, Afghanistan, for PBS NewsHour, with her piece from the Kabul airport.

With the Pulitzer Center’s support, Ferguson and her team traveled to Afghanistan four times in 2021 to document the conflict.

The Alliance for Women in Media Foundation will hand out the Gracie Awards in May in Beverly Hills, California.

Last month, Ferguson’s reporting on the fall of Kabul won the Overseas Press Club’s Peter Jennings Award. This reporting was in collaboration with the Pulitzer Center and PBS NewsHour.
